Mayor's Message 1 December 2023

Hello everyone,

On Tuesday night, Council held its monthly meeting and again we all donned bright orange t-shirts.

Orange is the global campaign colour to promote an end to gender-based violence and Indigo Shire Council is a strong supporter and participant in the 16 days of activism campaign, which is currently underway.

Every year, the campaign focuses on a specific theme and this year it’s, “Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”. The campaign calls on all residents to show how much they care about ending violence against women and girls by sharing the actions they are taking to create a world free from violence towards women. This year's campaign also calls on governments worldwide to share how they are investing in gender-based violence prevention.

I am very proud to represent an organisation that takes gender-based violence and all forms of discrimination seriously and I urge all residents to get behind this campaign, not just during the 16 days, but everyday.

Also on Tuesday night, Council elected Cr Bernard Gaffney to the position of Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months. I’d like to congratulate Cr Gaffney on his appointment, and I look forward to another productive year working together. There was no Mayoral election, as I was appointed to the role for a two year term in 2022.

We also endorsed the Annual Report 2022/23, which is now available on the website for viewing. We are all very proud of this document and the many milestones and achievements that were reached during the last financial year.

While the report recognises the many challenges we faced, particularly the storm events that caused widespread damage to infrastructure, it also showcases the great work we’ve done in addressing climate change, progress made on several large capital works programs, completion of the Chiltern Community Hub and the opening of the Indigo Epic Trail.  It’s well worth a read.

Enjoy your weekend and take care.
