Mayor's Message 13 October

Hello everyone,

This week I was again reminded of the rich tapestry of our community, made up of many selfless individuals who give up their time to improve other people’s lives.

I had the great privilege of attending the prestigious Victorian Senior of the Year awards at Government House in Melbourne, where two local residents received Council on the Ageing Senior Achiever Awards.

Beechworth resident, Lorna Green was recognised for her achievements in encouraging others to stay fit and active as part of her long-time role on the committee of the Beechworth Exercise Activity and Training group (BEAT).

She’s helped grow the membership to more than 90 and has organised the group’s social outings and activities such as boat and bus trips and theatrical performances. At age 75, she studied Certificate III in fitness.

Also recognised was David Martin OAM, who has been heavily involved with the Rutherglen RSL, dating back to 1969.

His significant contributions include the development of the Rutherglen Memorial Park, which involved acquiring obsolete artillery pieces, constructing a World War II Honour Wall, pathways, and various memorial structures.

Please join me in congratulating these two outstanding citizens.

The other great pleasure I had this week was officiating at a Citizenship ceremony in Beechworth, where we welcomed six new Australian Citizens.

There was so much emotion in the room, from tears to the biggest smiles, it was incredibly moving and such an honour to be a part of.

Congratulations to Peter and Marilyn Court, the Foot family – Adriaan, Lara and Orin and Emma Hadden. We are so pleased you have taken the oath and also chosen Indigo Shire to call home.

Regards

Cr Sophie Price
