Mayor's Message 14 July, 2023

Hello everyone,

Following another wet weekend, it isn’t a surprise that the state of our local roads is at the forefront of everyone’s minds and the topic of many conversations.

There’s no denying that last year’s flood events and the sustained wet weather this year means that across the state and also more broadly, our road network is in poor condition.

There are a number of steps we can take to report areas of concern, but until these requests are attended to, I urge you all to please drive to the conditions and to remain vigilant of the variable conditions.

In Victoria, the management of particular roads is the responsibility of either local Councils or Regional Roads Victoria. Understanding which authority manages what roads can be tricky, so I hope that the below information will help clarify this and assist you when you need to report potholes or other safety concerns:

Regional Roads Victoria is responsible for managing over 19,000kms of major roads and more than 4,000 bridges across the regional road network and you can find a full list of these roads here: VicRoads map of declared roads.

If you need to report a hazard on a Regional Roads Victoria road:

  • Call 133 RRV (133 778) for road maintenance or to enquire about works in your area Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.
  • For urgent road and traffic enquiries call 133 RRV (133 778)
  • Visit VicTraffic for information on traffic conditions or roadworks.
  • Major road project information can be found at Major Road Projects Victoria

Council maintains over 469km of sealed roads, a list of which can be found in our Road Register. If you have concerns about any of these roads, please contact us by either calling 1300 365 003 or by completing this form. Our crews are doing the best they can under a heavy workload so please be patient as they work through this and help us by letting us know what areas require attention.

I also want to reiterate that we continue to be in regular touch with RRV and are advocating strongly regarding your concerns on the deteriorating conditions of a number of Indigo Shire roads, as well as the Beechworth-Wodonga Road closure.

Another topic generating lots of discussion at the moment is our Australia Day Review. I touched on this last week and we’ve so far had a fantastic response, with plenty of feedback and productive discussion. If you haven’t yet done so, I urge you all to have your say.

This review is a key action from our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan and we’re working with a community working group, made up of representatives of a broad range of ages, locations, interests and views from across the Shire to consider the community feedback and explore all options before providing a recommendation to Council.

This volunteer group, made up of 14 locals who have dedicated much time and energy to ensuring this process allows for all voices to be heard, has been the driving force behind this engagement and I’d like to thank them for their time, passion and dedication. They, along with Council officers will be holding drop-in sessions across the Shire next week, for anyone keen to ask questions about the review or to discuss your viewpoints on this important topic.

You can find the dates and times for these further on in this edition.

Have a great weekend and stay safe,

Sophie Price
