Hello everyone,
It is with great sadness that I share with our community the news that a Rutherglen local has been critically injured in a tragic accident earlier today.
At the time of publishing this message, police confirmed the 76 year old woman is fighting for life in hospital. Our thoughts are with her family and friends and also with those who witnessed the accident and our first responders.
The accident occurred in Main Street Rutherglen, with the woman being struck by a car, shortly after 9am.
Today’s accident comes a week after a truck crashed into the front of a café in Main Street, highlighting the gravity of safety in this busy street.
As we head into the Easter break, we know that Rutherglen will be inundated with visitors, being one of the region’s most popular holiday destinations. The mix of cars, trucks and pedestrians in this narrow street is and always has been a recipe for disaster and this has certainly been highlighted in the past week.
While I can assure you we will step up our advocacy to Victorian Roads Minister Melissa Horne, to make safety improvements a matter of urgency, for now, out of respect for the family, I’d prefer we put the politics to one side, and hope for a positive outcome.
Please take care wherever you are over the Easter break and look out for your family, friends and neighbours and stay safe.
Cr Sophie Price.
