On Monday, the CEO and I attended a meeting of rural and regional Councils which make up the Albury-Wodonga Health catchment to discuss our ongoing advocacy efforts for a new single-site hospital. I am pleased to say that for the first time, there is now alignment between all councils in support of a new hospital built on a greenfield site in either Albury or Wodonga.
This agreed position now means we have a united and powerful voice to stop the current redevelopment of the Albury Base Hospital, in favour of a new single site facility that can service our growing region for decades to come. Indigo Shire has been stoic in advocating for better health care for its residents, and in August, we held an historic joint meeting with Alpine and Towong Councils to present a united front to governments and demand a better deal for our communities. To now have a collective of Victorian and New South Wales councils take this same stance, I now have greater confidence that the States and Federal Governments will come to the table to hear our concerns and those of the thousands of people that we represent. On Tuesday night at the first official meeting of the new Council, an urgent matter of business will be tabled, asking the new Council to re-affirm the position adopted at the tri-council meeting on 13 August. As I said at the time, if governments do not understand that this issue is at the heart of what our communities want us to advocate for, then they seriously do not understand our communities. Health services are the most important issue for our communities, and this is far too important for us not to continue to fight for. Late yesterday the Mayors of Albury and Wodonga issued a letter to the Premiers of Victoria and NSW requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the hospital issue, and Albury Wodonga Health is inviting community members to attend its AGM on Tuesday 10 December at the Albury Entertainment Centre.
