Our climate emergency declaration reflects a strong commitment to protecting, maintaining and enhancing our natural and built environment and to promoting sustainable living. Our communities are well prepared to adapt to and mitigate against the impacts of climate change.

What we have achieved to support our environmental responsibility objectives

• Developed Council's Emissions Reduction Plan
• Launched Our Climate Action - a dedicated platform to report on our climate action at Council and in the community
• Transitioned to purchase 100% renewable energy, reducing our annual emissions by close to 20%
• Purchased four electric fleet vehicles (EVs)
• Installed seven EV chargers at Council offices and depots
• Began development of a Tree Canopy Strategy – increase shade and habitat to support biodiversity
• Climate Change Policy 2024
• Installed solar PV and battery systems on community and Council owned buildings
• Delivered the Community Sustainability Grants
• Supported installation of four public EV charging stations - Yackandandah, Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen
• Planted thousands of street and park trees in our towns
• Supported community groups undertaking revegetation projects
• Controlled noxious weeds on our roadsides and reserves
• Participated in the soft plastics recycling pilot to reduce landfill
