Indigo Shire Council is one of seven Councils and three Alpine Resorts within the tourism region of Victoria’s High Country.

The region includes the shires of Alpine, Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield, Murrindindi, Towong and Wangaratta; and the alpine resorts of Falls Creek, Mt Buller/Mt Stirling and Hotham.

Tourism North East (TNE) is the Regional Tourism Board representing the north-east of Victoria, the region known as Victoria’s High Country.

TNE is one of  11 Regional Tourism Boards established at the directive of the Victorian State Government. These boards were created to act as the peak tourism organisations for their areas, working in partnership with Visit Victoria, industry and a range of government partners to support and develop regional tourism.

The councils and resort management boards within these shires/alpine resorts are financial stakeholders in TNE, providing financial support to underpin its activities and operations. State Government also funds the organisation through its Regional Tourism Partnership Program, administered via the Victorian State Government. TNE is a not-for-profit incorporated association.

Indigo - an important regional tourism partner

Indigo Shire Council is an important stakeholder in Victoria’s High Country, with 4 distinct tourism destinations, rich and abundant cultural heritage, nature and landscapes, inland waterways, exceptional food and drink offerings and varied and motivating accommodation, retail and events.

Council’s objective is to optimise the benefit Indigo receives from the collective regional investment and activity, as well as to support the development, sustainability and strength of our region’s Visitor Economy.

Council has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tourism North East confirming Indigo’s Regional Tourism Partner status from 2023/24 – 2025/26.

The previous MOU ran from 2020/21-2022/23.

Each year the Regional Tourism Partners (Councils and Alpine Resorts) pay a set annual contribution to Tourism North East.

Annually Tourism North East prepares a suite of services and initiatives each stakeholder can consider and elect to ‘buy into’ if the service or activity is considered of value to that stakeholder.

The suite of services and initiatives include the following:

  • Marketing
  • Strategy
  • Business Development
  • Product Development
  • Digital
  • Advocacy
