Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park is a unique part of our local environment - its 21650ha of forest and woodlands include nationally-significant examples of Box-Ironbark forest and also granite landscapes with Blakely’s Red Gum and Black Cypress Pine. The Park provides a refuge for the critically-endangered Regent Honeyeater, Turquoise and Swift Parrots, Brush-tailed Phascogales, Squirrel Gliders and Barking Owls. The Park also protects 42 threatened plant species, including many rare orchids.
We in Friends of the Park work to assist Parks Victoria staff to protect, maintain and improve the natural environment of the Park and also its infrastructure.
In recent years we have -
Removed weeds from large areas of the Park (including Olives, non-indigenous Wattles, Briars, Bridal Creeper, Blackberries, Inkweed and Peppercorns)
Taken an active role in the ongoing biennial project to release and track over 100 captive-bred Regent Honeyeaters in the Park
Checked and maintained annually over 150 nestboxes for Gliders, Tuans and Turquoise Parrots
Installed and maintained signage, historical information plaques and picnic facilities
We contribute over 500 person/days work to the Park every year.
We would love to see YOU at one of our monthly Field days (first weekend of each month, alternate Saturdays and Sundays)! The Park is a beautiful place to work in and we cater for all ages and levels of knowledge and experience. We also hold frequent mid-month work days for specific ongoing projects.
