Ride Sharing

Ride Sharing is a free to low cost way travel. Ride Sharing connects drivers with passengers who are heading the same way. At present in Indigo Shire there are several ways to be involved in a Ride Share.

Community Facebook Pages

You can use your local community Facebook page to request a ride or to let people know that you are able to offer them a ride. The details of the ride sharing are worked out between the driver and passenger privately and there may be a request made for a financial donation towards car running costs. This is an informal way to share rides and all parties travel at their own risk and can accept or refuse rides at their discretion.

Online Ride and Car Share Companies

Online ride sharing platforms are now in operation across Australia, that operate similar to a taxi. There is also a number of services where you can arrange to share your car or another person's car. Currently the options for ride sharing are limited in regional Victoria, however, if you are planning a trip, particularly to a city these may be viable options. A variety of platforms are listed below, you will require a credit card to utilise these.

In 2019, we completed background work to get a ride sharing service started and sought a local organisation to oversee the program. If your organisation is dedicated to supporting the community and would like to add ride sharing to their services, please get in touch with Kellie Sutherland, Access and Inclusion Officer email: kellie.sutherland@indigoshire.vic.gov.au@indigoshire.vic.gov.au

Red Cross Patient Transfer and Community Accessability

Red Cross Patient Transfer

Australian Red Cross offers transport to people in our Shire to access essential medical services within Victoria. A Red Cross vehicle can be provided and driven by a trained volunteer Patient Transport Officer.  This transport is available for both short and long distance, such as Wodonga, Wagga or Melbourne and comes at no cost to the patient. Funded by Australian Red Cross, this door-to-door service is very busy with two vehicles to service the region and bookings must be made well in advance.

Referrals for this service are made by your GP or medical practitioner via an online booking portal. Ask your GP or medical practitioner to arrange this transport service for you.

In making a referral the medical practitioner must confirm:

  • the client is eligible for the service
  • the client has given consent for their information to be shared with Red Cross
  • the appointment is for essential medical services and within the specified service time.
