The Burke Museum’s collection of more than 30,000 items is one of the oldest in Australia and we’re working hard to digitise this amazing legacy for future generations.
The museum has collected, through donations and acquisitions, thousands of photographs, natural history and geological specimens, textiles, memorabilia, art, artefacts and oral history recordings that tell our stories and reflect our changing society across more than 160 years.
With so many items, there’s always something new on display at the Burke and an exciting partnership with Museum and Cultural Heritage students from Deakin University is growing the number of items being digitised for online access anywhere in the world, anytime.

The Indigo community can donate items to the Burke’s collection to help add to the layers of history it reflects. An Acquisitions Review Group meets in February and August each year to consider new items.
