We are now in Caretaker Mode, otherwise known as the Election Period. During this period, from midday 17 September until 6pm on 26 October, there are certain restrictions on what we can and cannot publish. This is to ensure a fair election. Three exhibitions are on long-term display at the Burke Museum - the Cabinets of Curiosity, Street of Shops and People of Beechworth.
The Cabinets of Curiosity are natural history displays dating from the 19th century when collecting and displaying specimens from nature was popular in museums. The large collection of birds and other specimens like the Thylacine are displayed in the main hall in their original cases.
The Street of Shops which reimagines the Beechworth of the 1800s opened in 1979 and features hundreds of objects collected from the local community.
More recently, the 2022 People of Beechworth shows 10 large scale portraits of current local residents, shown together with historical artefacts from the collection, exploring themes like food and culture, volunteering, sport, Chinese history and gender equity, contrasting their stories with people from the past to show that our history is ever-evolving.
