The Telegraph Station is another gem of the Historic Precinct.
Built in 1858, the heritage-listed site was at that time, the region’s main communications hub between Melbourne and Sydney, transmitting all the latest news to the wider world using the internet of its day, Morse Code.
The station played a key role in delivering news of the manhunt of Ned Kelly and his Gang, their criminal exploits, the siege at Glenrowan and then eventually, the committal hearing at the Beechworth courthouse to the Australian public.
Volunteers now run the station as part of the International Morse Code fraternity and visitors can still send a telegram to other stations around the world.
The station also has an Oral History Room with recordings of local residents and an exhibition space for the pioneering surveyors who originally planned Beechworth and other surrounding towns.
Open daily from 11am - 2pm. Free entry. Disability access available.
