We are now in Caretaker Mode, otherwise known as the Election Period. During this period, from midday 17 September until 6pm on 26 October, there are certain restrictions on what we can and cannot publish. This is to ensure a fair election. Over the past four years more than 100 postgraduate students enrolled in Deakin University’s Museum and Cultural Heritage studies have gained valuable, practical hands-on collections cataloguing experience thanks to a partnership with the Burke Museum.
The museum has hugely benefited from the project which has seen thousands of items in the collection digitised and made available to the world via the Victorian Collections website.
Museum staff have mentored the students, teaching new skills across a range of collection types such as geological specimens and historical photos as well as working with copyright permissions.
The students have also worked on cataloguing hundreds of objects from Chiltern Athenaeum and Wooragee Landcare, and soon, from the Rutherglen Historical Society.
This project was Highly Commended at the Victorian Museum and Galleries awards in 2021.
