What will you take in an emergency?

While your emergency kit will be very personal, everyone should consider including:

  • ID documentation
  • a phone and charger
  • a battery radio with spare batteries
  • a torch with spare batteries
  • a first aid kit
  • cash
  • toiletries
  • food and water for 72 hours
  • any medications you require
  • sentimental items
  • a woolen blanket per person
  • pet needs
  • baby items, more information is available here

Using a checklist to pack your emergency kit can be helpful.

Handy Hints

  • Practice packing your car to ensure everything fits. Can you pack everything on your own?
  • Save important phone numbers, including your utility provider and insurance company and hearing loop phone numbers if required
  • Take photos of household items for insurance purposes
  • Back up important documents to the cloud or a USB - your local library might be able to assist with this
  • Have each family member take photos of daily use items they would like packed into the kit if they are not home. Print and leave this with your kit so others can help pack
  • Discuss sentimental items with your children. It's ok for them to include technology, toys and games as long as you have the time and space to pack these safely. Having the discussion prior to an emergency will save time and stress
