The project to upgrade the lighting to current AFL standards at Barkly Park, Rutherglen has reached practical completion. The Barkly Park lighting upgrade was funded by a grant of $100,000 from the Victorian Government’s Country Football and Netball Program, $40,000 from Indigo Shire and $25,000 from the Rutherglen Football Netball Club.
A 60 tonne crane was on site on 22nd and 23rd of April to remove the old concrete poles and lights, and then erect the four new 30m galvanised steel poles with pre-assembled lights attached. The lighting was tested and commissioned in the last week of April 2021.
Further good news is that the old poles and lights were able to be re-purposed to a new home, which is understood to be somewhere in the Western District.
Country Football contributes a wide range of social and health benefits to rural communities. It is vital for our community clubs to have access to a standard of infrastructure that supports participation for everyone. This project has provided lighting to AFL standards for club competition and match practice, allowing for extended use of the facilities and excellent opportunities for other recreational activities.
Barkly Park is a valuable community asset and this project has enhanced the existing facility. The continued maintenance and upgrades for our community parks and reserves will underpin the growth and retention of recreation activities in all our towns. The completion of this project supports our vision to work with our communities to secure a healthy, sustainable and progressive future for all.
