About this project

We redeveloped two courts at Barnawartha to be compliant for both netball and tennis. We also installed new LED lighting and constructed new shelters for players and coaches. 

Why was this project undertaken and how was it funded?

The redevelopment of the netball and tennis courts was funded by the Victorian Government’s 2021-22 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund – Female Friendly Facilities, a contribution from Council's Capital Works program as well as a contribution from the Barnawartha Netball Club.

What happened and when? 

A tender was awarded for the construction of the new courts at Council's April 2023 meeting. Site works commenced in September 2023 and completed by 30 March 2024.

12 April update

The courts recently re-opened for use, allowing the netball team to return to training at their home ground.

We still have some minor works complete, which include the installation of the tiered spectator seating next week.

16 February update

This project took another step closer to completion this week with the installation of the new lighting and acrylic surface now complete.

The new footpath in Stanley Street has also been poured, whichcompletes the pedestrian link between the Recreation Reserve and Indigo Creek Park.

Over the coming weeks, tiered seating for spectators will be installed and the remaining asphalt court re-fenced.

9 February 2024 update

The new courts are nearing completion with the new shelters, fencing and concrete paving all now complete.

The project is on target for completion by the end of the month and over the coming weeks we will pour the footpath linking to Stanley Street, prepare to the stand the new light poles and install the acrylic surfacing.

8 December 2023 update

Construction is progressing well, with the concrete base now complete and the new player shelters to be installed next week.

Light poles and fencing will be completed while the concrete cures ready for application of the acrylic surfacing early in the new year.

20 October 2023 update

Following some delays due to wet weather, works have resumed and contractors have been on site this week installing cabling for the new LED lighting that will provide extended usable of courts for all users.

Next steps are installation of drainage and preparation for pouring of concrete base surface .

22 September 2023 update

We’re making good progress with the crushed rock base layer to support the concrete slab for the new courts now under construction.

The next steps will be installation of cabling for the new lighting, drainage works and installation of the new fence posts.

8 September 2023 update

We commenced site works this week with the fencing removed and excavation of the existing courts underway.

Community engagement

The grant funding application was developed in consultation with the Barnawartha Recreation Committee of Management, as well as representatives of the relevant clubs.

Further meetings with the Committee of Management were held to confirm the scope of project works for tendering. Once tenders are evaluated it is planned that the Committee of Management will meet again to finalise project details prior to construction commencement.
