Gooramadda Road Repairs (completed 2023)

Within a 24-hour period between Monday 14 November and Tuesday 15 November 2022, a large section of Gooramadda Road, Rutherglen collapsed. What first appeared as a small sink hole, soon because a six-metre wide and two-metre deep ravine.

Every effort has been made to reinstate access and in late December, a temporary access road was opened to enable light traffic to use the road.

As of 19 January 2023, works began on constructing new culverts and rebuilding the road, which took approximately six to eight weeks.

UPDATE - FRIDAY 31 March 2023

Great news! Gooramadda Road was re-opened this week. We've deconstructed the temporary side road and removed the load limit, however speed restrictions remain in place while the road surface settles.

UPDATE - Friday 17 March 2023

We've made more great progress this week with the replacement works reaching road level and the rest of the site looking almost complete.

The final road shaping and resurfacing works are due to commence next week and we're hopeful we can announce the re-opening of the road shortly after that.

Please be aware that while the road now looks to be a passable route, it is still a closed construction site so please continue to use the temporary road.

Works are on schedule with the concrete works now complete and backfilling around the new culverts well advanced.

If all continues to go well, we're hopeful that the road will partially re-open in the next two weeks.

Once we re-open the road, we anticipate that there will still be some short traffic delays while we complete the final works and decommission the temporary access road.

Friday 24 February

We've made more progress this week with the custom concrete wingwalls and headwalls poured at both ends of the new culvert.

These will need to harden before progressing to the next step of backfilling around the new culverts and building the road up again.

UPDATE - Friday 24 March 2023

The road over the new major culverts on Gooramadda Road is one step closer to completion, with a new sealed surface applied this morning.

There are a few more finishing touches required before we can bring traffic back onto the main road, which we currently plan to partially re-open on Tuesday.

Once re-opened this section will remain under traffic management for a week or so while works to decommission the temporary road are completed.

We look forward to hopefully being able to provide confirmation of the partial reopening on Tuesday. In the meantime, please continue to use the temporary side road.

UPDATE - Friday 17 February 2023

We've made more great progress on the major culvert replacement this week, with the main foundations poured last weekend. This allowed for the eight large reinforced concrete box culvert segments to be lifted into place on Thursday.

This key step now allows works to progress to the formation and pouring of more key concrete elements which will need to cure properly over the next few weeks before the process of backfilling can commence.

Friday 10 February 2023

We've made steady progress on the construction of the new reinforced concrete box culverts required to reinstate the road, with the work site now safe to work in and the foundation works well progressed.

Following a slight delay due to the recent wet weather, we plan to pour the large concrete foundations in the next few days, which will pave the way for delivery and placement of the large pre-cast culvert units shortly afterwards.

We remain hopeful that we'll be able to reopen the main road in mid to late March.

Friday 23 December

A temporary access road is now open.

This road is a single-lane gravel side-track suitable for vehicles of up to 16 tonne, which allows for fire trucks and emergency vehicles. This limit reflects the fact that the access road a narrow, unsealed, lightly constructed road not designed for the usually high volume and weight traffic on this road.

As always, please take care in the changed conditions and follow the directional signage.

We've appointed a contractor to complete the reinstatement works of the main road and these works are due to begin in January.

It is still expected that the temporary road will be in place until March when it is expected that the main road repair works will be complete.

Friday 16 December

Construction of a temporary access road is now underway and we're hoping access will be reinstated by the end of next week. This road will be a single-lane gravel side-track suitable for light vehicles and local traffic and will be controlled by traffic lights.

We expect to appoint a contractor to begin the repairs to reinstate the damaged road next week and anticipate works will commence in early to mid-January and take six to eight weeks to complete.

We also made significant progress this week on repairing the damaged shoulder of the road, which was an important step in working toward restoring limited access.

Friday 9 December

We expect to begin construction on the temporary access road at this site next week following discussions with a local contractor. This gravel surfaced access road will be constructed within the road reserve around the major failure. All going well our target is to hopefully have some limited access restored before Christmas.

We also hope to award a contract for the main reconstruction works to install the new culverts and fully reinstate the road prior to Christmas however we don’t anticipate that these works will be completed for a number of months.

Friday 2 December

This week we’ve managed to secure the critical infrastructure – eight large box culverts - required to reinstate the road. This was a key part of the process, and we’ve largely completed the survey and design works, so this will allow us to seek tenders for contractors to complete the installation.

We are hoping to be able to award this contract prior to Christmas for works to be able to start early in the new year.

It is anticipated that works will take approximately 6-8 weeks to complete but we will be able to provide a further update on timing once we have secured a contractor.

In the meantime, we are still looking to be able to implement temporary load-limited access and we’ll share updates on this as we know more.

Friday 25 November

We've completed a detailed survey, catchment analysis and design for the site and this has proposed some larger culverts to reinstate the road and provide much higher capacity for future events.

We're now trying to source the culverts necessary to complete the works and better understand the lead times involved as these are in high demand at the moment.

This information will help inform how we pursue any temporary bridge solution and we expect to know more next week.

Should we be successful in finding a supplier that can meet these requirements, construction could potentially begin over the next few weeks but it’s currently looking more likely to be in the new year.

Friday 18 November

Our priority is to restore access as soon as possible and we're investigating options for a temporary bridge. We've also engaged engineers to complete a catchment analysis and culvert design, with surveying and advertising for the tender for construction to begin next week.
