About this project

The new road design included upgrades to drainage, a wider 7 metre sealed surface, improved shoulders and use of kerb up against some embankments to provide extra width.

The alignment and cross slope of the bend near the Beechworth-Wodonga Road was also improved. Upgrades to the existing guard fence were completed with the installation of some new short lengths to protect road users from other roadside hazards such as trees, deep drains and waterways.

The intersection with Johnson Lane was also upgraded with new culverts, a wider mailbox pull-in area and a sealed surface.

While the road design was developed to sit sensitively amongst the existing roadside vegetation Council identified a small amount for removal. A native tree, approximately 350m from the Beechworth-Wodonga Road, and already close to the edge of traffic, in poor health and leaning heavily into its neighbour was removed to facilitate the works. Minor pruning and removal of a small number of less mature vegetation was also removed in accordance with current legislation.

Why did we undertake the project?

This section of road suffered from numerous failures and significant roughness throughout, along with a number of unprotected roadside hazards close to the edge of the traffic lanes. The road was also below the preferred width for this classification of road and had a number of historical drainage issues to address.

When will this work be happening?

December 2020 Update

Council works crews commenced drainage upgrades on Thursday 10 December on a 1.5km stretch of Indigo Creek Road between the Beechworth-Wodonga Road and Johnson Lane. This is the first stage in the overall road upgrade project which will increase the width and safety of the road.

Minor delays to traffic are expected over the next few months as culverts are upgraded first before Christmas, followed by the road improvements in the new year. We kindly ask that all road users respect the traffic control signage for yours and our workers safety.

February 2021 Update

Following the completion of drainage improvements over the last few months, works on rehabilitating and upgrading the 1.5km section of Indigo Creek Road between Johnson Lane and the Beechworth-Wodonga Rd moved to the next phase this week.

Council crews began re-working and shaping the existing road material as the first step in creating the wider, smoother and safer road surface.

The road will remain open to traffic during these works, however minor traffic delays are expected due to speed restrictions and ongoing single lane closures for the next 4 - 6 weeks while the works are completed.

We appreciate your adherence to speed reductions and hazard signage while the road is being re-worked for yours and our workers safety.

March 2021 Update

Works to reconstruct and widen the 1.5km section of Indigo Creek Road are progressing well despite some minor rain delays. The last of the new crushed rock base should be placed and shaped in the last week of March, with the new wider seal coat scheduled to be applied either just before or after the Easter weekend subject to road conditions. We then hope to complete all of the remaining finishing works during April. As always we thank you for your patience during the works and adherence to speed reductions and hazard signage for yours and our workers safety.

April 2021 Update

Indigo Creek Road Upgrade  - Sealed

Contractors applied the new, wider seal coat to the upgraded road formation on Indigo Creek Road yesterday which takes the project one step closer to completion.

This section of road between the Beechworth-Wodonga Road and Johnson Lane has seen significant upgrades to drainage and road pavement over the last few months and is nearing completion.

However, we would like to stress to road users that the reduced 40km/hr speed limit is still in place while our Operations team finish a number of minor works and the loose stone hazard remains.

The new seal will be swept to remove excess stones in the coming week with new line markings, guide posts and signage to follow.

We again ask that you drive with care and observe all speed reductions and warning signs for yours and our workers safety.

July 2021 Update

Guard Fence Installation Commences on Indigo Creek Road

Contractors commenced work this week to add some finishing touches to the recently upgraded section of Indigo Creek Road. An older section of guard rail is currently being upgraded and some additional short sections added nearby to protect against hazards close to the edge of the road.

Weather permitting it is hoped these works will be finished by next week. We appreciate your understanding whilst traffic control is in place to all allow contractors to work safely.

August 2021 Update

Contractors recently completed the finishing touches to the upgrade project on a 1.5km of Indigo Creek Road with the installation of new guard fence to protect road users from some significant road side hazards.

These works have delivered a wider, safer road with greatly improved ride quality and drainage. A final seal coat will be applied later in the year to fully completed this upgrade.

What has this project delivered for our community?
