The Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club facilities have been upgraded. A new structure will provide increased space for boat storage and new female friendly club amenities to support the existing members and rapidly growing female participation in the sport. The project was funded by a grant of $100,000 from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, $60,000 from Indigo Shire and $30,000 from the Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club.
This important recreation facility hosts the oldest continually run regatta in Australia, with the first event held in 1863. The rowing shed is integral to facilitating this event. Indigo Shire Council recognised the inclusiveness that these improvements would bring, not only to the local rowing community, but also the participants that attend the regatta and enjoy Lake Moodemere and surrounds.
A contract has been let for the design and construction of the new shed.
Detail design has been finalised and site works are expected to begin shortly to demolish the old shed and commence construction.
After an extended planning and approvals process, site works began on 7 May 2021 with demolition of the old shed.
The old rowing shed has been demolished and the materials recycled. Site preparation has been completed, the septic system and under-floor drains installed. Despite the recent rain, steel columns for the new shed have risen from the mud on their new concrete footings. Preparation is underway for the concrete floor to be poured, prior to erection of the remainder of the shed frame and roofing.
The concrete floor is down, steelwork has been delivered, the roof is about to go up, the sun is shining!

Some great progress on this important facility this month. The shed is taking shape with the roof framing complete. Hopefully the weather will continue to improve to allow steady advancements throughout the coming weeks.
The shed structure is finished as shown in our photo. The internal fit-out for toilet and shower facilities is nearing completion, however there is still some work to connect and complete the septic system to the required standard prior to a Final Inspection Certificate being issued.
Following this, we must also complete site reinstatement works to Parks Victoria standards.
The new Lake Moodemere Rowing Shed is now complete. Providing increased space for boat storage as well as new female friendly club amenities, the site has now been returned to the Rutherglen Lake Rowing Club for its use and enjoyment.
During construction, the site had temporary fencing erected for public safety, but this did not restrict public access to Lake Moodemere and the parking area.
