Indigo Shire Council engaged Horizon Studio Landscape Architecture to develop a concept design for the roundabout in Rutherglen, at the intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Murphy Street. The landscaping work was constrained by needing to maintain sight lines for traffic at this busy five way intersection.
The Rutherglen roundabout is a key focal point when entering the town and an upgrade of the Roundabout landscaping provides a more welcome entrance to the town. The project was made possible due to Local Roads & Community Infrastructure funding.
The work was tendered and awarded to KR Hoysted Construction. Landscaping and construction commenced in February 2022. The works included brickwork, new exposed aggregate concrete, upgraded irrigation system, repairs to the kerb and channel and new plantings.
The Rutherglen Roundabout landscaping works are progressing well with the construction of a small brick wall and paths in the centre of the roundabout now. This element ties in with the new landscaping behind the Visitor's Centre as well as the brick facades of some of the heritage buildings in the Main Street. The current irrigation system has been upgraded and soil and mulch have been delivered.
Concreting works are scheduled for Monday 28 February and Tuesday 1 March weather permitting (unfortunately rain is forecast at this stage and works may be delayed). The concreting works will mean short traffic delays however traffic control will be in place to ensure the safety of motorists and contractors.
The final stage will be planting which weather permitting will take place towards the end of next week.
There will be traffic control in place and may be minor delays to traffic during the construction works.
