About this project

Indigo Shire is known for its beautiful natural environment, in particular its wonderful array of trees, a number of which have heritage significance.

We've mapped the planting of 427 trees across the Shire (detailed below) and in addition to these, we also have a more on order to fulfil customer requests, replace removed trees and fill single gaps. We also have over 100 trees in the nursery which we'll plant mainly in parks across the Shire, bringing our total number of trees planted this winter in excess of 500.

Why is this project being undertaken?

To ensure our beautiful natural landscapes continue to provide health and ecological benefits for generations to come, Council undertakes an annual tree planting and replacement program with the works being carried out in the winter months to ensure the new trees get their best start to life as possible once planted.

As well as enhancing air quality, trees improve the soil, water and the ecological condition of an area. The establishment of plant species improves ecosystems and creates habitats for birds, insects and animals.

What is happening and when?

The tree planting and replacement program commenced in late June with works expected to be completed around mid to late August, weather permitting.

What will be the impact of these works?

There is no major impact to the community while these works are underway, but the long lasting impact will be significant. The trees will enhance the aesthetics of our streets, will make our footpaths more shady and pleasant in summer and help cool our towns.
