Wahgunyah to Lake Moodemere Shared Trail (completed 2021)

Council staff put the finishing touches on the final 1.1km of The Wahgunyah to Lake Moodemere Shared Trail in the first week of June, with the installation of signage and safety handrails. Worksite barriers have now been removed and cyclists and pedestrians are welcome to come and try out this extension to the trail network. Users should please be mindful of some loose stones on the surface whilst the new seal settles in and watch for vehicles on some shared road sections. Whilst works on the trail are completed, Council will be carrying out some further work on Hynes Road between the end of the trail and the Lake Moodemere Recreation Reserve boundary over the next few weeks to improve drainage and gravel surfaces.

The Lake Moodemere recreation area and public toilets are only a short 2km ride from the end of the sealed trail via the gravel road network. Whilst more caution is required by cyclists on these quiet gravel roads, the journey through this riverside area is worth the extra pedal power. Council will continue to explore opportunities for further improvements to these recreational trails. 

Works on extension of the Wahgunyah-Lake Moodemere Shared trail reached a major milestone this week with the application of the sealed surface.
We still have some further works to complete tidying up the site and installing signs and other trail hardware, so we ask that you kindly observe the worksite signage and stay off the trail for a little longer.
We will advise when the trail will be ready for cyclists and pedestrians as soon as possible.

Council works crews have been busy over the last few weeks constructing another 1km section of the Wahgunyah to Lake Moodemere shared cycle and pedestrian trail. This extension will take the trail a big step closer to the Lake Moodemere Reserve and is nestled in between the picturesque Murray River and local vineyards in beautiful Autumn colour after harvest. 

Weather permitting the trail will receive an all-weather bitumen seal and be open for use in the next few weeks.

Mayor Jenny O’Connor cut the ribbon and officially opened stage 2 of the Wahgunyah to Lake Moodemere Trail today handing it over for use to the Wahgunyah Community. 

The event was attended by 30 local residents, 4 kids and a dog, most of which took the opportunity to take in the beautiful weather and cycle or walk the recently completed path.

The completion of stage 2 of the trail provides a link between The Wahgunyah Recreation Reserve, The Willows Reserve and the Murray River. Those who took time to meander along the path were grateful for the access to the impressive Red Gum Flats and take in a picturesque corner of the Murray River.

A school teacher from the Wahgunyah Primary school remarked that “the path would provide a much safer option for the school’s annual cross country program than the back streets of Wahgunyah previously used” we look forward to hearing further stories of use from the Wahgunyah community.
