This project was supported by the Victorian Government through the Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenue of Honour Grants Program.
The Yackandandah Memorial Gardens, on Wellsford and High Streets, were constructed after the First World War. The wrought iron fence was forged locally in Meurants Foundry. The fence pillars list 216 names of those who served in the First World War and a Latin inscription which reads “Fidels Usque Ad Mortem”, - Faithful Even to Death.
The project was supported by the local RSL, Council’s Heritage Advisor and the Yackandandah Historical Society.
Indigo Shire Council values the importance of our war memorials because they act as historical touchstones. They link the past to the present and enable people to remember and respect the sacrifice of those who fought and died in wars.
The fencing repairs and repainting have enhanced this important heritage asset. The works have allowed a continued focal point for memorial activities.
